A witness may need a question to be communicated differently, without changing what they are being asked. KallosSim’s early-access intermediary area focuses on that communication task.
Choose the Registered Intermediary role and a focused communication situation. This is a distinct practice area, rather than a children’s social work conversation with a different label.
Morgan is a fictional witness who loses track of a question containing several ideas. The practitioner checks whether hearing one part at a time would help. Morgan describes the difficulty without being given an answer.
Practise identifying the communication barrier and explaining a proportionate adjustment. Keep the person’s own account intact. The purpose is access to communication, not coaching evidence or improving a story.
Voice is part of the rehearsal: say the words, hear a response and notice how the exchange develops. Text remains another way to practise. The conversation shown here is a scripted fictional illustration.
Afterwards, look back at the wording. Use evidence-linked reflection to consider a possible interpretation, an alternative response and one question to explore with a supervisor.
Reflect on the wording with appropriate professional supervision. This fictional exercise does not assess a real witness, establish accreditation or replace the relevant intermediary and justice procedures.
What you'll practise
Criminal justice stages.
Not safeguarding referrals.
Process stages match the MoJ RI pathway: request, communication assessment, ABE planning, Ground Rules Hearing, and trial evidence.
Pre-ABE · Assessment
Communication assessment
First meeting with a vulnerable witness before an ABE interview. Explain the RI role plainly, assess comprehension, and identify pseudo-compliance — without coaching testimony.
Registered Intermediary ABECourt · GRH
Ground Rules Hearing
Translate assessment findings into concrete questioning rules for advocates. Hold the boundary between facilitating access and influencing evidence.
